Được đăng bởi Man United on Monday, February 22, 2016

A BRISTOL pensioner has denied 15 sex crimes against young boys dating back to the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Douglas Slade, 74, who lived in Knowle West during the time of some of the allegations, spoke only to deny charges of buggery and gross indecency against five boys when he appeared at Bristol Crown Court today.

The charges date from between 1965 and 1988, and involve boys who were aged between nine and 15 at the time of the allegations.

Charges include six counts of buggery, seven counts of gross indecency and one count of inciting a boy under 14 to commit an act of gross indecency.

here are also charges relating to one boy Slade is alleged to have abused over a three-year period.

The abuse is said to have begun when the boy was aged 13, in the 1970s.

Some of the abuse is alleged to have taken place in Clifton.

The pensioner had been living in the Philippines (Angeles City, Pampanga) before he was he was detained by Filipino Immigration Authorities in June and extradited to face allegations made by three complainants.

He was arrested on his arrival back in the UK on September 9 and since then, a further two complainants have come forward.

Slade is accused of abusing boys who were allegedly passed between members of a paedophile group.

Another alleged member of the group, Christopher Skeaping, is also accused of involvement in one of the alleged offences and appeared by video link at the hearing.

Slade appeared in a grey jumper and was given the option of sitting down while the long list of allegations was read out.

He declined the offer, and stood up, holding on to the dock while the charges were read out.

Slade has been remanded in custody and awaits trial.

Five hours of Philippine Airlines Hell for Travelers trapped on grounded plane for 5 hours

Được đăng bởi Man United

Five hours on the tarmac. A pilot whose idea of reassurance was proclaiming, “My life is more important than yours.”

Two busloads of passengers on Philippine Airlines’ Bangkok-Manila PR731 deplaned after verbally tussling with cabin crew and Captain Filomeno Tacan during three hours of waiting in a sweltering Airbus Industrie A340-300.

Those who kept faith with PAL finally got off the ground after five hours. The passengers, including this writer, landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 nine hours past boarding time -- to discover all our luggage had been offloaded at Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Shouts of rage filled NAIA 2 when, after waiting 30 minutes at Carousel 5, airport staff said, “there’s nothing on the plane.”

PR731 was scheduled to fly out 1:50 pm Bangkok time. It was nearly 7 p.m. when the plane took off.

Two mechanical problems, coming one after another, caused the delay.

Shortly just past 1 pm, as passengers settled down, Tacan announced that mechanics were patching up some engine leak problem.

Take-off was called an hour later. A second engine malfunction delayed the flight anew.

With only one emergency ground air-conditioning unit, the cabin grew hot. Crew had to open the main exit to let in some air.

Toddlers stripped down to their diapers. One, just behind me on row 36, sprawled on the carpet, which he seemed to find cooler. His father gave him and a sibling some ice to rub on their faces.

The pantry at the rear of the aircraft was crowded with folks seeking drinks and food, including some elderly diabetics requesting for some sugar fix.

As irate passengers demanded a lowdown on their safety, Tacan came on the public address system.

“Sorry sa nainip sa likod. Kami din dito nainip. Nobody wants a delay. Mas mainit dito sa cockpit kesa likod, no?” Tacan said over the cabin public address system after explaining that mechanics were assessing the plane’s status. (Sorry to those at the back who are getting impatient. So are we. Nobody wants a delay. It’s hotter in the cockpit than in the back.)

As curses and mocking laughter filled the plane, Tacan continued with his spiel.

“Of course, we’ll make sure it’s safe. We’re flying with you. We’re not allowing you to fly without us. So we are with you. Common sense lang. Kasama namin kayo. Lay down your fears. We’re making sure, that’s why we’re having this checked and rechecked.”

“Pasensya lang kayo. Sa Mumbai, nadelay kami ten hours. Isipin niyo yan.” (We were delayed ten hours in Mumbai. Think a bout that.)

Tacan said ground crew had given the green light to fly. If another malfunction occurred while the plane taxied, he promised to return to the terminal.

Families and groups of friends then demanded to deplane “for peace of mind.”

Cabin crew, some of them crying, tried to mollify passengers.

“I’ll sign a waiver,” an international NGO worker who sought anonymity told the chief bursar. “My first concern is the plane and its stability. The other is the pilot.”

“We want to go back to Bangkok and have some peace of mind,” said a man standing on the landing with a companion who cradled a baby in her arms.

“We don’t want to fly with the pilot. We want to transfer,” said a couple from business class.

A man who said he was suffering from claustrophobia said he understood that Tacan had to follow engineers’ assessment, “but adding drama just made it annoying and fearful.”

When the bursar asked them to reconsider, the NGO worker asked, “Is it the financial implication that we’re talking about or the welfare of the passengers?”

That prompted another huddle by the crew and Thai airport officials, which took almost another hour.

Proud of his skills

Passengers lined up, but half returned to their seats after hearing they would have to find their own lodging if they could not get on the next flight to Manila.

The crew said that was the consequence of “voluntary” deplaning.

As authorities sorted out the protocols, Tacan went out of the cockpit.

When lawyer Janet Francisco reminded him of passengers’ rights, Tacan repeated his message: “I consider my life more important than anybody. That’s why I’m not lying. Otherwise, I won’t be with you.”

Francisco answered back, “That’s your job, to protect the people.”

“With that in mind, I’m more important than anybody else,” the pilot replied.

As the exchange went on, he reiterated having been stuck on the tarmac for ten hours in Mumbai, India. The passengers, he added, were not allowed to get off.

He defended his capabilities. “Kami, galing sa fighters. Ano doon, daming katapangan. Pero ngayon, airline ‘to.”

Tacan, a veteran pilot who once flew boxing champ Manny Pacquiao from Manila to Los Angeles, may have meant to lighten the mood of passengers.

Crew said the pilot had 31 years of flying experience and apologized for “the language problem,” hinting that the Visayan may have gotten lost in translation.

But Tacan was full of bluster in the cabin and even approached some passengers as he and the crew readied to emerge from NAIA2.

“Sino yung nagrereklamo? I told you, I love my life more than yours,” he told the businessclass passengers who just shook their heads

Tacan, who had left his female co-pilot to do the in-flight announcements, came on at landing, telling passengers to claim luggage at Carousel 5.

After waiting almost half an hour, we went around asking what the problem was. PAL staff milled around but would not engage passengers until a foreign passenger began shouting and one other person threw a slip of paper at personnel manning the misplaced baggage counter.

Once they learned what happened, jaws dropped. Raul Salvacion, an employee who took addresses and other passenger details said it was his first time to encounter this kind of case. He also said PAL in NAIA was not informed about the offloading of baggage.

Some passengers who had deplaned to catch another flight caught up with us at NAIA. They left with their luggage. The rest of us called it a day.

Pacquiao's popularity soars after same-sex marriage controversy

Được đăng bởi Man United

Manny Pacquiao's long-time promoter Bob Arum claims his fighter's popularity has gone up following his controversial statement about same sex marriage, which has become the No.1 trending topic on the Internet as well as in print and broadcast media.

Arum, who sided with Pacquiao's sponsor Nike Sportswear when it dropped Pacquiao as one of the company's major product endorsers, does not agree with Pacquiao's recent statement about same-sex marriage but he said he respects Pacquiao's opinion.
In a recent TV interview, Pacquiao stated that even animals do not engage in same-sex (sexual) relationships.

"It’s only common sense. Would you see any species of animals who engage in male to male, female to female [sexual] relations? Animals, then, are better than humans [in that sense]. They know how to distinguish males from females," said Pacquiao in an analogy.
"If people then engage in male to male, female to female relations, then they are worse than animals," he added.

Pacquiao has since made a public apology but reiterated that his stand on same-sex marriage remains.
Same-sex marriage isn't allowed in the Philippines. Pacquiao who is an incumbent congressman is against its legalization. But Arum is in favor of same-sex marriage and finds Pacquiao's statement offensive to the LGBT community.

“I think it’s reprehensible,” Arum told RingTV.com in a phone interview last Wednesday. “I’m in favor of same-sex marriage. I’m in favor of gay rights. A lot of my friends are gays, particularly in California and Hollywood, so it’s very offensive to them and that’s what I’m most concerned about,” he said

“As Manny’s promoter, I must say I agree with Nike,” Arum said. “They’re in the business of selling products, and Manny’s remarks were offensive to many people, particularly those in the gay and lesbian community.” he added.

Now Arum says Pacquiao, who is seeking a senate seat in the May 9 national elections, has become even more popular after his controversial statement which angered the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community.

The Pacquiao-LGBT controversy is still on top of the trending topics on the internet and it could continue to be a favorite topic as politicians who needs free publicity are riding on Pacquiao's nationwide media reach. Pacquiao's public awareness rating is the highest among the senatorial candidates for the May 9 elections.

"Right now, promoting Manny is not just about promoting a fighter; it's about promoting a politician. It's like promoting (Donald) Trump. It causes a lot of interest, Arum said.
"You have to understand, Manny is running for the Senate in the Philippines. The comments were made for a Filipino audience. It's a different culture. The Philippines is not America. His popularity went up in the polls after he said what he said," he added.

New Possible Chinese Radar Installation on South China Sea Artificial Island Could Put U.S., Allied Stealth Aircraft at Risk

Được đăng bởi Man United

A possible new Chinese radar installation in the South China Sea could put American and allied stealth aircraft at risk as part of a wider detection network similar to U.S. efforts to find Russian bombers in the Cold War.

Late January satellite imagery from the Center for Strategic and International Studies and Digital
Globe show the installation of what’s likely a high frequency radar installation the Chinese disputed holding of Cuarteron Reef near the Philippines.

The imagery from DigitalGlobe shows a field on the island with 65 foot-tall poles in a field on reclaimed land on the reef – China’s southern most holding in the region – that are similar to other maritime HF radars, Greg Poling, head of the center’s Asian Maritime Transparency Initiative told USNI News on Monday.

“Why would you have 20-meter poles spread across this features if it’s not high frequency radar? ” Poling said.
“Maybe a giant tarp?”

It’s unclear from the imagery if the site on Cuarteron is operational and inquires left with the Department of Defense by USNI News on Monday were not immediately answered. The Washington Post first reported the installation early Monday afternoon

A Jan. 24, 2016 image of Cuarteron Reef in the South China Sea with what is likely a high frequency radar array. CSIS, DigitalGlobe Image used with permission.

Bryan Clark, a maritime analyst at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments (CSBA), said that while a high frequency radar on the island could have some law enforcement value – like similar radars the U.S. uses to detect drug runners in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean — it’s likely an HF radar on Cuarteron has a secondary military use to detect stealth aircraft.

Similar U.S. and Russian radars can detect surface targets at ranges well over the horizon – 80 to 200 miles. However Chinese and Russian versions could also notice the presence of low observable aircraft, Clark said.

“If I’m China, this is what I want to install so I can monitor maritime and aviation contacts,” he said.
“It’s got a nice dual use. It can find other aircraft that would be hard to find with traditional early warning radar frequencies.”

China has already installed similar radars on its coastline that are used to detect the presence of stealth aircraft.

A possible HF array on Cuarteron could feed what its detects back to mainland China through data links to provide information to radars capable of better targeting stealth aircraft less real estate to scan and then route that data to anti-air warfare missile systems.

The setup “gives you some indications and warning that there are stealth aircraft in the area,” Clark said.

In particular, U.S. stealth aircraft – like the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit bomber and Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter – are optimized against the high end of the radar spectrum.

Higher frequency radars – on their own — can tell when a low observable or stealth aircraft is in its range but do not have the fidelity to lock weapons. However — as reported by USNI News in 2014 — Russia and China both are perfecting lower band radar that could successfully target low observable aircraft working in conjunction with an HF early warning system. The radars could also provide information to Chinese fighters a general idea where to intercept an adversary.

In addition to the U.S., Australia and Japan are in the process of acquiring F-35s.

The U.S. used a similar idea when it create the Distant Early Warning line to detect Russian bombers starting in the late 1950s.

“It’s the same idea as the DEW Line,” Clark said of an HF array on Cuarteron.
“You could look at this as extending the range of their early warning radars.”

Chris Carlson, a retired U.S. Navy captain and analyst told USNI News that the installation on Cuarteron was much smaller than other similar mainland arrays and its unclear how well the secondary function of the radars would work at the size seen in the images released on Monday.

Additionally, given the location near the Philippines, the alleged HF installation on Cuarteron could also monitor U.S. aircraft movements in the country at long range — all in a package with which China can claim for civilian law enforcement uses, Clark said.

“They can say this is for fishery enforcement and maritime domain awareness and that’s what China will probably claim,” he said.

Beijing has repeatedly said the new installations on the reef, also home to a lighthouse completed in October, are to provide “better public services and goods for the international community,” according to a Monday press briefing with Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Hua Chunying.

Last week satellite imagery of Woody Island in the Paracel chain near Vietnam revealed more than 30 mobile anti-air warfare missiles had been placed on the island – raising questions on China’s peaceful intent in the region.

Beijing implicitly defended the move of the HQ-9 system to Woody Island – confirmed last week by Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

“The Chinese side is entitled to safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests,” Hua said later in her Monday briefing.
“China’s deployment of limited defense facilities on its own territory is its exercise of self-defense right to which a sovereign state is entitled under international law. It has nothing to do with militarization. It is something that comes naturally, and is completely justified and lawful. The U.S. should view that correctly instead of making an issue of that with deliberate sentimentalization [sic].

54% increase in net income for SM Prime in Philippines

Được đăng bởi Man United

SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (SM Prime), the Philippines’ leading integrated property company, reported a 54 percent surge in consolidated net income to P28.3 billion last year, boosted by P7.4 billion one-time trading gains on marketable securities booked in the first quarter of the year.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, SM Prime said its recurring net income grew 14 percent in 2015 to P20.9 billion due to an 8 percent increase in consolidated revenues to P71.5 billion.

“SM Prime sustained its overall net income growth in 2015 as the malls’ overall operations led the performance of the group. This is a reflection of the overall expansion of the economy that continues to be driven by the 6.2 percent growth in household consumption,” SM Prime president Hans T. Sy, said.

He added that “we believe we could sustain this growth in 2016 as we continue to focus on enhancing the synergies across our core business units as an integrated property developer.”

Rental revenues from malls and commercial spaces, which accounted for 57 percent of the consolidated revenues, rose 12 percent to P40.7 billion from P36.5 billion in the previous year.

This is due to new malls and the expansion of SM City Bacolod, all of which contributed an additional total gross floor area of 728,000 square meters. Excluding the new malls and expansions, same-store rental growth continued to exhibit 7 percent increase.

Rental growth was also complemented by the opening of two office buildings. Combined, these office spaces added GFA of 171,000 sqm.

SM Prime’s real estate sales, accounted for 31 percent of consolidated revenues, was flat at P22.2 billion primarily due to lower revenue recognition from the almost completed housing projects that were launched in 2011 and 2012.

On the other hand, the recently launched projects continue to enjoy brisk sales, with SM Development Corp. (SMDC) posting higher reservation sales by 12 percent year-on-year to 14,390 units in 2015.

As a result SMDC, which contributes 93 percent of the housing group’s real estate sales, achieved a 15 percent increment in sales value worth P39.8 billion from P34.6 billion last year. Net income increased by 8 percent to P5.1 billion from P4.7 billion in 2014.

Cinema and event ticket sales, which represented 7 percent of consolidated revenues, recorded a 12 percent growth in 2015 to P4.8 billion while other revenues, which consisted of amusement income from rides, bowling and ice skating operations, merchandise sales from snack-bars and sale of food and beverages in hotels stood at P3.8 billion, up by 14 percent from P3.3 billion.

The growth was mainly driven by the opening of Sky Ranch Pampanga, improvement in hotels’ food and beverages income as well as an increase in sponsorship income

Vape could soon be VAPED out in the Philippines

Được đăng bởi Man United

Philippines - Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), increasingly popular among young Filipinos, are not advisable for those who want to quit smoking, the Department of Health (DOH) warned last week.

Anthony Leachon, DOH consultant for non-communicable diseases, e-cigarettes could not help a person who wants to stop smoking.

“Electronic cigarettes are not advisable since you don’t kick the habit. You can easily go back to smoking,” said Leachon.

He said if a person wants to quit but can’t do it on his own, he should consult a doctor for proper counseling and medication.

Maricar Limpin, executive director of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control Alliance Philippines, has expressed concern over the proliferation of e-cigarettes.

Limpin warned that e-cigarettes give a false sense of security because these are being marketed as something that would help one quit smoking “when, in fact, there is no evidence to prove that.

First developed in Beijing, the e-cigarette is an electronic device that looks like the real thing. By producing an inhaled mist, it supposedly simulates the act of tobacco smoking.

But Limpin said the e-cigarette is also addictive because the liquid used to produce vapor contains nicotine.

“E-cigarettes are being flavored to cover the (taste of nicotine). So you would think that there’s no nicotine in it until you develop addiction,” she said.

Nicotine is only one of the 70 toxic chemicals, 70 of them carcinogenic, found in cigarettes. These include butane, used in lighters; cadmium, used in batteries; stearic acid (candle wax); toluene (industrial solvent); ammonia (toilet cleaner); paint; methanol (rocket fuel); carbon monoxide; arsenic (poison); methane (sewer gas); acetic acid (vinegar) and hexamine (barbeque lighter).

Like cocaine and heroine, nicotine is addictive because it disturbs the balance of chemicals in a person’s brain.

During smoking, nicotine stimulates the blood pressure and oxygen level in the body, causing the release of dopamine in the brain.

Dopamine is a chemical that gives pleasurable feelings and since it is triggered by nicotine, it relies on this toxic substance to achieve the desired sensation, resulting in addiction.
